EVMS, Sentara combine to earn high rating in diabetes care
Sentara Healthcare and EVMS diabetes specialists are celebrating the latest hospital rankings from U.S. News & World Report.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital earned a spot in the top 50 programs for the third straight year, soaring from number 43 last year to 31 this year, according to the rankings released August 14, 2018. The program is staffed by EVMS specialists with EVMS Endocrinology and Metabolism and the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.
“We are very pleased to see the increase in ranking,” said Jerry Nadler, MD, the Harry H. Mansbach Chair in Internal Medicine, Professor and Chair of Internal Medicine and Vice Dean for Research. “We are appreciative of the collaboration with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and very much honored to have such outstanding faculty who are wonderful clinician-educators and also carrying out ground-breaking research and presenting their findings at major meetings.”
Elias Siraj, MD, the David L. Bernd Distinguished Chair for Cardiovascular and Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine, Chief of Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders and Director of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center, echoed that enthusiasm.
“We are very proud of the improved ranking,” Dr. Siraj said. “This success is due in part to the successful conduct of the cardiovascular diabetes program that we run in collaboration with the Sentara Heart Hospital in both patient care and research.”
Mary Blunt, Interim President of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, praised the collaborative effort.
“This national ranking is a joint achievement between EVMS and Sentara Healthcare, and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with EVMS in the years to come,” she said.
The diabetes program was just one of Sentara’s successes in the latest U.S. News & World Reports rankings. The Cardiology and Heart Surgery Program ranked in the top 50 for the 18th year; nephrology ranked in the top 50 for the first time in five years (EVMS physicians also work in nephrology at the hospital), and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital was ranked number 1 in Hampton Roads.
