EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center hosts conference
It was standing-room only for the annual Turning the Tide on Diabetes conference organized by the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.
Fourteen faculty members took part in the conference at EVMS April 14.
Elias Siraj, MD, the David L. Bernd Distinguished Chair for Cardiovascular and Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine, Chief of Endocrinology and Director of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center, served as Course Director. Dr. Siraj also presented “Case Scenarios for Discussion with Panelists.”
Jerry Nadler, MD, Harry H. Mansbach Chair in Internal Medicine, Vice Dean for Research and Professor and Chair of Internal Medicine, presented “Role of Inflammation in Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Effect on Beta Cells and Liver” and took part in a panel discussion.
Deepak Talreja, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, presented “Management of Dyslipidemias to Reduce Cardiovascular Events, with a Focus on Diabetes Patients.”
Alan Wagner, MD (Ophthalmology Residency ’86), Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, presented “Eye Diseases in Diabetes.”
Elizabeth Jenkins, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, presented “How to Properly Use Oral Agents and GLP-1 Analogs.”
Donald Richardson, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, presented “Inpatient Management of Diabetes including Transition to Ambulatory Care.”
David Lieb, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, presented “Use of Insulins: Old vs. New Insulins.”
Aaron Vinik, MD, PhD, the Murray Waitzer Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research, Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of Research and the Neuroendocrine Unit in the Strelitz Diabetes Center, presented “Case-Based Management of Diabetic Neuropathies to Prevent Foot Ulcers, Amputations and Falls.”
Catesby Ware, PhD, John and Lillian Norfleet Professor in Internal Medicine and Chief of Sleep Medicine, presented “Sleep Apnea and Metabolic Syndrome: What is the Connection and What Can We do?”
Robert Palmer, MD, the John Franklin Chair in Geriatrics, Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, presented “Diabetes in the Elderly: What are the Special Issues and Concerns?”
Margaret Baumgarten, MD, Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine, and John Brush, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine, served as session moderators.
Additional faculty on the program committee were Jennifer Ryal, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine; and Etta Vinik, MEd, Instructor of Internal Medicine and Associate Director of Diabetes Education.
