New student clinic provides full range of health services
Students have a new resource to address their health needs. A Student Health Clinic opens Monday, March 2, in Andrews Hall.
For the past two years, a team of faculty, staff and students have worked to create the clinic. It will provide comprehensive health and wellness services, including mental health, all in one location on campus.
“Student health and well-being are a priority for us, and we recognize the concerns students shared,” says Richard V. Homan, MD, President and Provost, and Dean of the School of Medicine. “We believe these changes will ensure they have their health needs addressed efficiently and effectively.”
The clinic’s medical director is a physician dedicated to student services and not involved in student education or training.
The clinic is located on the fourth floor of Andrews Hall, and students will be seen in a private and confidential space. Currently, the hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to noon, but students will be able to schedule afternoon appointments.
This fall the center will operate on the EVMS clinical schedule, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There also will be a phone line dedicated to student needs. To schedule appointments, students can call 757.446.5700.
“We would like to extend our thanks to Allison Knight, PhD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Director of Student Wellness, for her commitment to this important project,” Dr. Homan says. “Over the past two years, Dr. Knight has worked tirelessly to provide the best possible experience for students, and we believe the new Student Health Clinic will make a significant and positive impact on campus.”
Dr. Homan also commended the efforts of Alison Dobbie, MB, ChB, the Glenn R. Mitchell Chair in Generalist Medicine and Professor and Chair of Family and Community Medicine, as well as a provider with Ghent Family Medicine, for helping fulfill this important mission.
