Pathologist receives national teaching award
Richard Conran, MD, PhD, JD, Professor and Chair of Pathology and Anatomy, has received a key award from the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC).
Dr. Conran was selected to receive the Michele Raible Distinguished Teaching Award, which honors pathology educators who demonstrate a range of contributions at the local, regional and national levels in undergraduate medical education. The award was presented at the APC annual meeting in July.
“Throughout his career, Dr. Conran has been devoted to medical education at every level,” says the award citation, dubbing him a “triple threat” with his doctoral degrees in medicine, pathology and law.
Dr. Conran came to EVMS in 2013 following a career in the US Army. He spent most of his career at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he concentrated on pediatric pathology, and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, where he worked in prenatal, perinatal and placental pathology.
In addition to his service in the armed forces and at EVMS, Dr. Conran has been active at the national level in his profession. For instance, he served on the committee responsible for developing pathology test materials for the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam. He also is a long-time members and former chair of the APC Undergraduate Medical Educator Section and is founding associate editor of Academic Pathology, the official APC journal.
The award citation also cited Dr. Conran for his role as a mentor: “He shows a deep interest not only in providing medical education but in the professional development of educators.”
Dr. Conran earned his PhD in pathology at SUNY Buffalo. He completed his medical degree at Albany Medical College of Union University and his law degree at Washington College of Law.
