When is it time to see an ophthalmologist?
Choosing an eye doctor is an important decision. If you need glasses or contacts, you would most likely see an optometrist, but there are a number of conditions that might require additional help.
Here are a few times that it’s best to reach out to an ophthalmologist:
- Any loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Changes in vision: seeing spots, flashes, jagged lines
- Double vision
- Pain, discomfort, redness or swelling of the eye or area around the eye
Patients with some diseases, most notably diabetes, need regular eye exams to prevent complications of the disease and to preserve vision. All diabetics need at least annual eye exams.
