Elza Mylona, PhD, is Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and Professor of Medicine. In this capacity, she is responsible for providing overall leadership and oversight for matters related to faculty, including the development of programs and processes that support faculty in their various academic roles. Her office manages all faculty business processes related to re-appointment, promotion, credentialing and office assignments. She also offers policy guidance as needed on faculty roles and responsibilities in accordance with the bylaws of the institution. Her office provides direction and support to departmental leadership in faculty issues and acts as an impartial intermediary for faculty on professional matters. Dr. Mylona collaborates with the Faculty Senate and maintains active communication and coordination with central Human Resources department to facilitate matters related to faculty relations. She plays a key role in the orientation of new faculty members to the university and oversees faculty academic awards.
Prior to joining EVMS, she was Associate Dean for Faculty Development at Stony Brook University Medical School. She is the founder of multiple faculty development programs and launched the first institutional mentoring program for junior clinical faculty. Dr. Mylona has served in leadership roles in a variety of professional associations including the American Association of Medical Colleges groups on educational and faculty affairs (GEA and GFA), the International Association of Medical Education (AMEE) and the Generalists in Medical Education (TGME). She has been instrumental in developing innovative curricula programs and assisted faculty members in the study and improvement of education in a variety of settings. She has conducted numerous faculty-development workshops at regional, national and international meetings and has served as a co-investigator on federally funded research projects related to faculty development. Scholarly interests include mentoring and career advancement of faculty, organizational development and leadership and advancement of women.
