The P.B. Young Service-Learning effort sees medical students working in classrooms with the students and teachers of P.B. Young Sr. Elementary School. The elementary school is located in the Young Terrace Community considered to be in the poorest 1% of neighborhoods in the U.S. It is home to over 700 families and is the largest community housing neighborhood in Norfolk.

This service-learning opportunity provides students with an up-close look at the impact of social determinants on children living in a socioeconomic challenged community. EVMS students have tutored at-risk students in reading and math, and in some cases the children students have achieved marked improvement in fluency in these two fundamental academic areas.
