The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship provides advanced-level supervised training, sufficient for program graduates to sit for the geriatric medicine subspecialty examination. The program duration is 12 months.
All applicants must apply through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
We select applicants for interviews using the following criteria. Candidates must:
- Have completed an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine or Family Medicine residency program
- Be board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine or American Board of Family Medicine
- Be eligible for permanent medical licensure in Virginia
- Hold a valid ECFMG Certificate, if foreign medical school graduate
- Be proficient in speaking and writing English
- Intend to register for the geriatric examination upon completing the geriatric medicine fellowship and to pass the board examination in Geriatric Medicine
- Be able to remain in the United States and obtain proper visa for training
- Submit a personal statement of professional goals in geriatric medicine
- Submit three reference letters supporting their application, including one letter from the applicant's program director
Selected candidates will interview with the program director and a panel of geriatric medicine and gerontology faculty.
Candidates should express enthusiasm for teaching geriatrics to medical students, residents and other trainees and have a strong interest in geriatric medicine, gerontological research and patient care. Candidates should highlight any experience:
- Documenting prior gerontological research
- Participating in student geriatric clubs or societies
- Enrolling in geriatric medicine-related electives
- Volunteering with older patients and groups
