Documentary screening to help raise awareness of veterans' issues

Story Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2013 08:27:00 EDT

The documentary “Baghdad ER” will be shown in McCombs Auditorium from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. The film gives a frontline perspective of battlefield medicine, and the showing — which is intended primarily for first- and second-year medical students but open to all campus — is intended to raise awareness about the health concerns faced by military veterans. A pre- and post-viewing survey will help gauge whether the documentary helped advance that goal.

This is the first of three events planned this fall as part of EVMS' involvement in the Joining Forces Initiative, in which more than 100 Association of American Medical Colleges-member schools are taking part. EVMS also will participate in the AAMC-sponsored Joining Forces Wellness Week Nov. 11-15 and will host a Dec. 4 presentation by military psychiatrists about the the challenges in diagnosing and treating post-traumatic stress disorder.
