Services

Specialists in infectious disease are experts in the diagnosis, management, follow-up and long term care (if needed) for infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.   

These services are provided at various venues, such as acute care for inpatients in area hospitals, and outpatient care at clinics that include Hofheimer Hall on the EVMS campus, DePaul Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, and seven public health departments, located in Gloucester, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Williamsburg, Norfolk and on the Eastern Shore.

EVMS Infectious Disease provides:

• consulting services to area hospitals for the prevention and transmission of infection within health care facilities.
• consulting services to these hospitals on the appropriate use of antibiotics to prevent the development of resistance among bacteria that could potentially be treated.  This activity, called antibiotic stewardship, requires continuous surveillance of antibiotic resistance among bacteria recovered from patients through a partnership with the Diagnostic Microbiology Laboratory based in each hospital.  
• inservice education and infectious disease updates to other health care providers in the area.
• health care management and counseling to residents of the area who are traveling overseas.
• vaccines and medications to keep travelers from becoming infected during travel to various areas of the world.

Also within EVMS Infectious Disease is the Center for Comprehensive Care of Immune Deficiency (C3ID), which receives operational funds from federal, state and local agencies for care of patients infected with HIV.  This funding is in the form of Ryan White Grants A, B and C.  The center is the only one of its kind in Hampton Roads. 

• Services included in these grants are provided by physician faculty of EVMS Medical Group, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, as well as case managers and counselors, all supported by patient intake staff and adherence/counseling nurses.
• All services provided by C3ID are comprehensive and provided in a confidential setting.

A unique aspect of services rendered in the Infectious Disease Division is wound care, hyperbaric and regenerative medicine services, provided at the DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk. 

• Patients receive outpatient surgical procedures, wound care, hyperbaric treatment and infection prevention by the same provider, in one visit.
• This approach leads to the best possible outcome, including the prevention of amputations.
